 College-Preparatory Curriculum and Tailored Instruction

The Achieve Community Charter School is fiercely committed to cultivating intellectual curiosity and providing students with daily rigorous college-preparatory instruction set to high standards. Our teachers are provided with targeted ongoing professional development and regularly analyze student data to drive daily instruction and long-term planning. We ensure that every student Achieves.

How we do it

  • Comprehensive Curriculum: Teaching the most important at just the right time
  • Student Investment and Choice: Different pathways to the same goal
  • Continuous Data Cycle: Monitoring and adjusting practice to maximize impact
  • Blended Learning: Two teachers all the time
  • Teacher Development: Collaboratively building teacher practice

School Culture

ACHIEVE understands that a positive school culture facilitates and adds to strong academic performance. We foster a college-bound culture that builds in students a sense of empowerment and intrinsic motivation to learn by explicitly teaching and constantly reinforcing ACHIEVE student values: DREAMS (Diligence, Respect, Empathy, Appropriate self-expression, Model Citizenship and Self-control). Instruction matters greatly, but it is only truly maximized when students feel an empowered sense of purpose and desire to learn. This kind of value of, and curiosity for, knowledge must be developed within an atmosphere of safety, routines and respect.

How we do it

  • College Culture: ACHIEVE believes that all students are capable of succeeding in college or in a post-secondary career
  • SEL Values: Student values have been identified to build character and skills for learning and life success
  • SEL Curriculum: Explicit instruction to develop students SEL competencies and create the conditions for learning in classrooms
  • ACHIEVE Habits: Behavior management system that includes rewards and incentives for positive behaviors and restorative consequences for misbehaviors

Safe and Supportive Schools

ACHIEVE Academy schools serve a very vulnerable population where the majority of our children are growing up in “extreme poverty,” (i.e. meaning our students’ families are generally earning less than $10,000 per year). According to the Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) study (a survey of exposure to trauma events such as death of a family member, violence, and sexual abuse) our students are exposed to trauma at a rate four to eight times greater than that of the general population. This affects our children’s cognitive and social development. ACHIEVE has established an integrated, trauma-informed intervention system in its schools designed to proactively identify the needs of every student and matches them with tailored supports and resources. ACHIEVE Roads to Success uses academic and social emotional learning data to tier each student and develop an individualized learning plan that utilizes a combination of instructional remediation, such as small group instruction, and social emotional learning resources, such as therapeutic counseling.

How we do it

  • Intervention & Referral Services: Process for assessing student need and developing plan of action for academics, attendance and social-emotional development,
  • Trauma-informed training: Providing teachers with the brain science and classroom skills to address the toxic stress that impedes student learning
  • Data System: A student tracker used to log positive and negative behaviors and monitor the efficacy of intervention plans

Data Drives Decisions and Action Planning

ACHIEVE uses a variety of assessments to keep our finger on the pulse of student learning:  a combination of daily, weekly, monthly, biannual and annual tools allow leadership and teachers to adjust practice regularly and efficiently. School leadership and teachers set student growth objectives (goals) in the beginning of the year.  Goals are tiered by student readiness level and regular on-going analysis is conducted to measure progress towards goals.

How we do it

  • ACHIEVE Database: The ACHIEVE database serves as a centralized warehouse for all student input and outcome data.  The database is self-run and fully integrated with all programs
  • Data Management of School: Data is used to support the decisions in accordance with the school’s strategic plan.  ACHIEVE’s unique input and outcome data collection allows ACHIEVE to evaluate programs and measure their impact on student Achievement
  • Teacher Friendly Data Tools: Teachers use a data program to track all behavior data, print character reports, and analyze formal and informal assessment data regularly

School-Community Partnerships

Achieve Community Charter School  provide families and the community with a wide variety of opportunities to support student learning. Schools regularly host parent education workshops, dialogue with community leaders and door-to-door outreach campaigns. ACHIEVE also partners with social service agencies to help stabilize our most vulnerable families.

How we do it

  • Linking Family Engagement to Academics: Family engagement staff meet with teachers to identify workshops and activities that support student learning in the classroom
  • Parent Leadership: Targeted opportunities for families to engage in the life of the school, whether volunteering to plan workshops and activities or assisting teachers in the classroom
  • Social Service Partnerships: Partnerships with social service providers to support families in the areas of housing, health and financial assistance
  • School as Community Hub: Achieve Community Charter School  bring the community together through hosting neighborhood events and maximizes local partnership to build a stronger community.

Operational Efficiency

To raise student Achievement every minute must be used strategically. ACHIEVE structures its schools so that human capital can improve student outcomes.

How we do it

  • Instruction and Operations: At each ACHIEVE school there is both an instructional and operational leader. This allows the instructional team to focus on student Achievement and the operations team to make sure the school runs smoothly to support instruction.
  • Strategic Planning: Each ACHIEVE school develops a comprehensive strategic plan annually that drives staffing, budget and instructional programming. School teams regularly check-in on progress indicators
